Matthiasson makes a couple Chardonnays, but this one stands out as an ode to Napa in the past, the Napa that garnered attention during the Judgment of Paris back in 1976. It’s an ode to fresh, clean Chardonnay that wasn’t heavily oaked or buttery. It’s an example of what Julia Childs would drink when she was cooking. This is a blend of Chardonnay from different lots that did not make it into the Linda Lista Vineyard bottling. Matthiasson harvests grapes at different periods, some early to retain freshness and acidity. Others are harvested later to allow more texture and richness—the perfect balance. This undergoes a gentle touch of French oak. This is a table wine, but with the same attention to detail as Matthiasson’s other wines.
